Florence has a genuine off-season, unlike coastal Tuscany — but the gap between "quiet" and "busy" is bigger than most guides admit. Here's the honest version.

Spring (April–June)

The most popular window, for good reason: mild days, long light, and everything from wisteria to street cafés in full swing. It's also when the Uffizi and Accademia sell out fastest and the Duomo dome queue is longest. Book timed tickets weeks ahead. Late April and early June are slightly calmer than the May peak.

Summer (July–August)

Hot — genuinely hot, often 33–36°C (91–97°F) with little shade in the piazzas — and busy with both tourists and Italians on their own summer break (many small family-run restaurants close for part of August). Mornings before 10am and evenings after 7pm are the workable hours; the middle of the day is for museums with air conditioning, not walking tours.

Autumn (September–October)

Many locals' pick, and ours. Temperatures ease to the low-to-mid 20s°C (mid-70s°F), the harvest season brings wine and truffle menus, and crowds thin out noticeably after the last week of September. Still book major museum tickets in advance — this is peak season for tour groups too.

Winter (November–March)

The genuine off-season. Cold and often grey, with real rain some weeks, but also the thinnest crowds of the year, the shortest museum queues, and noticeably lower hotel prices outside the Christmas–New Year week. Many visitors are surprised how well Florence works in December: fewer people, festive lights, and you can walk straight into churches that have a 40-minute wait in June.

Our take: late September through mid-October is the best all-round window — ask any Florentine and they'll say the same. If budget matters more than weather, late January and February are the quietest and cheapest weeks of the year.
