The categories

  • Hostels — Florence has a genuinely good hostel scene, from classic dorm-bed backpacker spots to newer "poshtel" properties with private rooms and real design attention, some with excellent rooftop terraces at a fraction of hotel prices.
  • Budget hotels and guesthouses — small, often family-run properties, sometimes a few flights up in a shared building with no lift, trading some polish for a genuinely lower price in a still-central location.
  • Convents and religious guesthouses — a lesser-known option: several convents in and around the centre rent simple, clean rooms to travellers of any faith or none, often at a noticeably lower price than a comparable hotel, sometimes with an earlier curfew.

Where budget stays work best

San Lorenzo and the area around Santa Maria Novella station offer the best combination of value and location — central enough to walk everywhere, with a genuinely wide range of budget options. Slightly further out, near Santa Croce's eastern edge or across the river in parts of Oltrarno away from the main squares, prices drop further while staying within a comfortable walk of the centre.

What to check before booking

  • Exact walking distance to the sights you care about most — "central Florence" gets used loosely; check the map, not just the label.
  • Whether there's a lift, especially for upper-floor budget properties in older buildings.
  • Air conditioning, genuinely important for a summer visit and not universal at this price point.
  • Recent reviews specifically about noise — budget properties are more likely to be on livelier streets, and thinner walls make it more noticeable.

Saving further without sacrificing quality

Travelling in winter (excluding the Christmas–New Year week) rather than April–October cuts accommodation costs substantially across every category — see our best time to visit guide. Booking a room without breakfast and eating at a local café instead is usually both cheaper and better food.

Good to know: Florence's tourist tax applies at every price point, including hostels — budget it in separately; see our budget guide.
